History
Vavesaari is located in Kangasniemi municipality, in the region of Etelä-Savo, approximately 60 kilometres norhteast from Mikkeli, the Capital of the Province of East Finland. The Estate dates back to 18th century. The name of the estate is a reminder of the lake Puulavesi area's history as a productive fishing ground. The local fishermen used to dry their tackle on the estate grounds, hence the words ”vave”, which is an old name for the sticks used to drying fishing nets, and ”saari”, Finnish for island. The estate area was actually an island until 1842, when the waterlevel of the lake Puulavesi was lowered and the area became mainland.
